Thai Marriage Visa: All You Need to Know
None of the cultural, language and religious barriers have prevented US-Thai marriages from happening. Cross-cultural marriages in Thailand are not just acceptable but also highly popular. Fortunately, the Thai law allows your visa process to be expedited if you’re married to a Thai national.
Here’s what the process entails:
The Thai Marriage Visa: A Brief Introduction
In Thailand, the marriage visa is officially known as the Non-Immigrant O Marriage Visa. This visa applies to anyone who is married to a Thai national. The visa is valid for one year, after which it needs to be renewed till you remain married legally. However, this type of visa doesn’t allow the holder to work in Thailand. If you wish to do so, you need to apply for a work permit separately. If you start working without a permit, you could be subject to fines, imprisonment, and cancellation of your marriage visa.
What Are The Visa Requirements?
Here’s what else you need to apply for the visa:
- A marriage certificate issued by your home country. You could also be asked to submit an ‘Affirmation of Freedom to Marry’ from the Thai consulate located in your country.
- You should have at least 400,000 baht in a Thai bank account. To prove this, you need to get a signed affidavit from your embassy.
- If you don’t have 400,000 baht in the bank account, an annual pension totaling to 400,000 would also do
- To prove your financial standing, you’ll have to submit a signed letter from the bank that states that any fund transfer from abroad was cleared at least two months before the visa application. You will also need the latest bank book, a medical certificate, and a police clearance.
The Application Process
There are two ways to go about this. You either apply through the Thai Royal Consulate in your home country or any immigration office in Thailand. You can initiate the application outside Thailand for either 90 days or a year and can later get the marriage visa activated from the immigration office. When the visa is close to expiring, make sure you apply for an extension within the last 30 days of the stay permit.
In most cases, the application process takes up four weeks or so. However, if it’s a complicated case, you can expect a delay of one week or two. In the case of a divorce, the visa becomes invalid, and you’d be required to leave Thailand.
